Dr George R Mather

 

The houses in Annfield Place were occupied mainly by doctors and ministers. At no 11 there lived a very public spirited doctor who took a great interest in the various exhibitions held in Dennistoun and was instrumental in raising £3000.00 for the building of the People's Palace - originally planned to be built in Alexandra Park.


It was proposed that his  memory would be kept alive by a bust which was placed in the People's Palace in the Green by friends and admirers. However, currently this bust is in storage.


There is a bronze bust of Dr George R Mather by Archibald McFarlane Shannon registered in Glasgow Museums collection as S.68. This is currently stored at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre who have allowed Dennistoun Conservation Society to photograph and display the image here. Thanks to Tracey Hawkins for her kind assistance.
